During the white nights season, the city hosts many events under open air, which are not disturbed even by bad weather. One of the most beautiful is the “Imperial Gardens of Russia” festival.
This year the festival will take place a little later - from June 21 to 27 and not in Mikhailovsky, but in Summer Garden. Each festival in past years had its own theme. We remember dedications to French, Italian, British gardens, labyrinth art, the Russian avant-garde and the revolution.
This year’s festival is called “Flower Assembly” - in memory of the decree adopted by Peter the Great 300 years ago on holding assemblies. The format of the festival has also changed: instead of large-scale installations landscape designers Intimate floral arrangements will dominate. This is a necessary measure.
The Summer Garden is not Mikhailovsky; it is impossible to create landscape installations on the lawns here. Festival partners from the Vorontsov Palace in Crimea came up with the exhibition “The History of the Rose”. The public will see 22 panels telling about famous historical characters and the roses associated with them.
The fountain on the Tsarina platform is decorated with geometric compositions of white chrysanthemums and red roses. Near the monument to Ivan Andreevich Krylov, eight objects created by children from social institutions. The kids were asked to fantasize about the themes of Krylov’s fables: “The Monkey and the Glasses,” “The Crow and the Fox,” “The Dragonfly and the Ant,” “The Swan, the Crayfish and the Pike.” According to Olga Cherdantseva, this is a reminder of the labyrinth with Aesop’s fables, which was in the Summer Garden under Peter the Great.
All the ponds in the Summer Garden will be decorated with flowers. For example, three compositions of pink and cream chrysanthemums, made in the form of rays, will appear in the Menageriiny Pond.
In the central part of the “Cross Walk” bosquet, flower arrangements will be created, symbolizing the seasons. “Spring” and “Summer” will be made of flowers, “Autumn” - from herbs, vegetables and fruits, and “Winter” - from coniferous branches and cones.
An unusual exhibition in the Red Garden, the vegetable garden of Peter the Great, will also be dedicated to the seasons. There they will show compositions of fruits, vegetables, mushrooms and herbs, made in the style of the Italian Mannerist artist Giuseppe Arcimboldo.

During the festival, from June 21 to 27, entrance to the Summer Garden will be paid. A ticket costs 500 rubles, for children under 18 years of age, students and pensioners - 200 rubles, a family ticket for parents with children (2 adults and 2 children) - 800 rubles. It is more profitable to purchase tickets in advance, before June 21. On the website of the gardens of the Russian Museum, tickets now cost 430 rubles and 160 for preferential categories.

On June 9, it opened its doors to visitors for the tenth time. The anniversary exhibition of landscape art is dedicated to the theme of the avant-garde. According to tradition, the festival is held during the white nights season; for visitors, the organizers and participants present a variety of landscape compositions, garden art objects and installations on the territory of the Mikhailovsky Garden. During the festival, the Mikhailovsky Garden turns into a cultural and entertainment venue. Concerts, lectures, master classes, excursions, fashion shows, special programs designed for different ages visitors.
I have been trying not to miss this event for several years now. Mikhailovsky Garden, summer weather, sea of greenery and flowers, installations on given topic… It’s interesting to compare your view of landscape objects with the authors’ ideas. I will try to take you along the alleys of the garden, stopping at those objects that somehow attracted my attention - an interesting idea, original execution, a symbiosis of materials used, simply beautiful and original, and sometimes touching and sincere. I in no way pretend to provide a complete description of the festival; I present exclusively my view of Avangardens 2017.
Before introducing the festival participants, I would like to draw attention to social projects. There are about a dozen of them, including mainly educational institutions or creative studios"young" representatives.
"Dancing Garden" Boarding school No. 1 in the Vyborg district of St. Petersburg for deaf children.
"Fruits of Enlightenment." Yukkov boarding school and the department of sociocultural communications of the Russian Museum.
Flowerbed "Suprematism". Psychoneurological boarding school No. 7 of St. Petersburg.

The living birds did not break away from the “flying brotherhood” and, demonstrating great dignity and a certain amount of courage, posed for annoying photographers.
The water surface of the pond was occupied by the “Zangezi” project of the creative team Performance “Zangezi” and the St. Petersburg State University Alumni Association.
Two heart objects were presented at the festival. The first is “The Heart of the Garden” from Olga Podolskaya’s gallery.
The second is “The Heart of the Avant-Garde,” created in the creative workshop “Masters of the Forest.”

This is the view of the author of the project, Reyo Kela, on people, society and time. The author does not give his definition of who his quiet people are. Dumb? Forgotten? Self-distanced? Viewers are invited to draw their own conclusions. What’s interesting is that if the “Quiet People” throw off their clothes, faceless crosses will remain in the clearing.

Russian perfumers - members of the Perfumers Guild - have created a line of fragrances in the Avangard and Revolution styles. Along one of the alleys of the Mikhailovsky Garden there are stands with storage tanks filled with aroma gel. The fragrances dedicated to the people and events of the revolutions of 1917 are presented. The aroma “I am Mayakovsky” turned out to be too cloying for me, the aroma “Malevich” was saturated with a variety of smells, just as an artist’s paintings are saturated with the color of paints. But the aroma “Anarchy” turned out to be very sweet, light and slightly dizzying. I was so carried away by “absorbing” the smells that I forgot to capture the “alley with smells”. But you definitely won’t pass by. Where visitors with zeal and pleasure “bow” to multi-colored tanks (and each scent also has its own color), the Perfumers Guild works. There is a perfumer on duty in the alley, answering questions; the scents you like can be purchased at souvenir shops Russian Museum.
