The Golden Age of Piracy is coming to an end. The ships of the British East India Company, led by Lord Beckett, massacre the pirates. In this they are helped by the sea devil Davy Jones, the captain of the Flying Dutchman, whose heart is with Beckett. Meanwhile, Elizabeth Swann, Captain Barbossa and Will Turner are in Singapore trying to obtain a ship and a map that can help find Captain Jack Sparrow from Singaporean Xiao Fen. During negotiations, they are attacked by soldiers of the East India Company, who found them thanks to a spy.

During the battle, it turns out that Will Turner entered into an agreement with Xiao Fen, the meaning of which is still unknown. The heroes receive a ship and go to the End of the World, which is located beyond the distant cold seas and is a giant waterfall from which the ship with the main characters falls. Jack Sparrow is imprisoned in Davy Jones' hiding place. Since he died at sea, his soul did not go to the next world, but remained at the bottom of the sea. From loneliness, he began to develop a split personality, and he imagines himself as the entire team of the “Pearl”. He tries to catch the wind and sail away, but then it turns out that the ship is in the middle of the desert.

Moreover, once on the sand, Jack discovers that pebbles are following him on his heels. The stones turn into crabs and push the Black Pearl towards the shore, where they sit castaways Elizabeth, Will, Barbossa and others. At this time, Beckett places a detachment of soldiers under the leadership of Admiral Norrington on the Dutchman and mocks Jones, reminding him that he is now subordinate to Beckett and the East India Company (his heart is still in Norrington's hands). Jack Sparrow and his friends sail and see the souls of the dead who never made it to the next world. There they see the deceased governor. Elizabeth tries to save her father, but is unsuccessful.

After long journey the ship runs out of provisions, but the quick-witted Jack turns the ship over (with the help of his crew), and the heroes again end up in the world of the living and land on the island, where they find the corpse of the Kraken, which Jones killed with his own hands on Beckett’s orders. Xiao Fen attacks the Pearl, and the meaning of his deal with Will becomes clear - Xiao Fen gets Jack, and Will gets a ship with which he can save his father from the Flying Dutchman. In turn, Xiao Fen hands Sparrow over to Beckett and breaks his terms of the deal.

Barbossa and Elizabeth try to convince Xiao Fen to help them escape and go to a meeting of pirate barons, which include Xiao Fen, Captain Jack Sparrow and Barbossa himself. For the second time, the name of Calypso is mentioned - the goddess of the sea, who was imprisoned in a human body at the first pirate council. Xiao Fen agrees on the condition that Elizabeth stays with him. He admits that he considers Elizabeth to be Calypso herself, who must be freed by the pirate council, since she is the only one who can stop Davy Jones.

Meanwhile, Jack agrees with Beckett that he will show him the location of the Bay of Lost Ships - the meeting place of the pirate lords, and will also force all the pirates to leave the well-protected bay into the open sea, where Beckett’s armada can easily kill them. In exchange for this condition, Beckett promises not to tell Jones that Jack got out of his hiding place. Jack returns to the Pearl and orders Will to be imprisoned for treason. Xiao Fen's ship is attacked by the "Dutchman" and Xiao is killed during the battle.

Dying, he gives Elizabeth his symbol of power - the peso - and appoints her as the new ship captain and pirate baron. The survivors are captured by the crew of the Dutchman under the command of Admiral Norrington. He is shocked to meet Elizabeth, who tells him about the murder of her father on Beckett's orders. Norrington swears to Elizabeth that he was not involved in this. In the prison cell, Elizabeth meets “Bootstrap” Bill Turner, Will’s father, who has almost become one with the ship, but tells her that Will will have to choose between his father and his love, because if Jones is killed, he will be obliged to replace him, becoming eternal himself. captain of the Dutchman.

Norrington helps Elizabeth and her new crew escape to their ship. Elizabeth kisses Norrington and escapes the ship, but Bootstrap attacks him and mortally wounds him in the presence of the crew of the Flying Dutchman. Jones makes an attempt to recruit Norrington to the team, and the admiral responds to the question “Are you afraid of death?” pierces Jones with the sword that Will forged for him. Jones takes the sword, and the Dutchman's crew takes prisoners of the East India Company soldiers. Davy Jones himself goes down to the lower deck to pick up the key and the chest with the heart. However, the soldiers who were not captured block his path to the chest, and Beckett’s assistant, Mercer, says that he is now in command of the Flying Dutchman and shows him the key. Davy Jones reports to Mercer.

At this time, Will, who escaped from the punishment cell, leaves signals to Beckett, throwing the bodies of the killed soldiers into the sea. Jack discovers him and resets him, giving Will his compass. Tia Dalma argues with Barbossa, as a result of which he imprisons her in a cell. In the conversation it is revealed that the sorceress is the goddess Calypso. Arriving at the Bay of Lost Ships, Jack and Barbossa go to a meeting of the pirate council. There, Barbossa offers to free Calypso from captivity in human body, but other barons resist him. Elizabeth then arrives and takes Xiao Fen's place. All captains put down their “pesos” (pince-nez, bottle neck, wooden cup, playing card, false eye, etc.) onto the tray, thereby revealing the pirate council. The exception is Captain Jack Sparrow, who hid his "peso" and did not put it on the tray. Barbossa, however, managed to recognize what kind of “peso” Jack had. Upon learning of the imminent arrival of Beckett's armada, the pirates begin to argue about what to do.

Some propose to remain under siege in the bay, which is a real citadel. Elizabeth offers to fight, and Jack supports her. Barbossa replies that according to the pirate code, war can only be declared by the Pirate King, which is confirmed by the Keeper of the Code, Captain Teague - Jack's father. The Lords begin to vote for the King, but everyone, like a pirate, votes only for himself, except for Jack, who unexpectedly votes for Elizabeth, thereby making her the King.

Elizabeth declares war on the East India Company, and pirate barons forced to support her as the Pirate King. Thrown into the sea, Will is picked up by Beckett's ship. Will claims that he can find the Bay of Lost Ships using Jack's compass, which points to what its owner desires most. In the morning, the Company's armada, led by the Dutchman, arrives at the bay, where it is met by a fleet of pirates. Beckett, Jones and Will meet Elizabeth, Barbossa and Jack on a small sandbank between the fleets. Elizabeth exchanges Jack for Will, which everyone agrees with. Elizabeth refuses the offer to surrender. Barbossa attacks Jack, but not with the intent to kill.

Having stolen the last "peso" from Jack, he takes Tia Dalma out of the ship's hold and performs a ritual to free the goddess, believing that she will help the pirates defeat Beckett's armada. But Calypso is angry with everyone - both Jones and the pirates who imprisoned her. She crumbles into a thousand crabs and disappears. A favorable wind blows on both sides, and Beckett gives the order:

Tell Jones to give no mercy to anyone. He'll be happy!

A signal is transmitted from Beckett's flagship to the Dutchman, and Mercer orders the weapons to be prepared. The “Dutchman” floats out from the ranks of the Company’s ships, and the “Pearl” sails towards it. Calypso creates a whirlpool. Barbossa turns right just before the whirlpool, and Jones leads the Dutchman straight through the whirlpool. A shootout begins between the Flying Dutchman and the Black Pearl. During the battle, Jack escapes from the Dutchman's hold and takes the chest with Jones's heart from the Company's guard soldiers, and Jones himself kills Mercer and removes the key to the chest from his corpse. He intends to pay everyone off. Then he notices Captain Jack Sparrow, who jumps onto the mast of the Flying Dutchman, and is transported there. Jones fights Jack on the yardarm.

Jack cuts off Jones's tentacle, on which the key hangs, and drops the chest with the heart onto the deck of the Dutchman. Both ships board each other, and a battle between the crews begins. Will chooses the moment and asks Elizabeth to marry him. She agrees and asks Barbossa, as the captain of the ship, to marry them. Although Barbossa is busy fighting with the crew of the Flying Dutchman and the East Indian soldiers Trading Company, he marries them right on the ship. Next, Will ends up on Jones' ship, where he fights with his father, who does not recognize him.

Jones attacks Will and mortally wounds him with the sword he forged. Bill Turner finally remembers his son and attacks Jones, but he repels the attack and prepares to kill Turner Sr. as well. But suddenly the captain of the "Dutch" freezes - Jack Sparrow pierced Jones's heart with a fragment of a sword clutched in Will's hand. Jones falls into a whirlpool and is followed by his ship. But before that, Jack and Elizabeth jump from the ship using a makeshift parachute, and Bill Turner cuts out his son's heart to keep it in a chest instead of the dead captain's heart.

The “Pearl”, under the command of Jack, goes straight to Beckett’s flagship, which is armed with a hundred cannons. Then the “Dutchman” emerges from under the water, safe and sound, and its crew has been restored to human form, because now the ship has a new captain. Beckett doesn't know this and thinks victory is close until the Dutchman turns to attack him. Both ships enter from the sides of the flagship and begin shelling. Beckett is shocked by the sudden realization of complete and inevitable collapse. He says that this is a business approach, and meekly accepts the complete destruction of the ship, forgetting about his subordinates. After the destruction of Manovar Beckett, both ships go to the company's armada, but it turns around and leaves. All the pirates rejoice at the victory, and Will tells his father that he is free from Jones's slavery. The father asks to stay on the Dutchman, to which Will gladly appoints him as helmsman.

The crew of the Pearl prepares a boat for Elizabeth, on which she sails to the island to meet her husband. Before sunset, Will must return to his ship and will not be able to set foot on land for another 10 years. He entrusts Elizabeth with watching over his heart and sails off to do what Jones was supposed to do - transport dead souls to another world. Jack walks along the pier with his two girlfriends from Tortuga, promising them a ride on his ship, only the Black Pearl is already visible on the horizon. Jack takes a sailboat and sails away.

On the Pearl, five crew members approach Captain Barbossa and ask to know their new target. Barbossa tells them about the fountain of eternal youth that Juan Ponce de Leon was looking for, but discovers that someone has cut out the middle of the map. He rolls his eyes and curses Jack, who meanwhile sits in the boat and looks at the map, sailing off on his new journey.

    Post-credits scene

After the final credits, the action moves forward 10 years, where Elizabeth and her son are waiting for Will on the shore. They see a green flash at sunset, which means Will's soul is returning to the living world. After this, a ship is shown sailing towards Elizabeth and her son, and then Will himself is shown standing on the ship.

The fifth installment of the Pirates of the Caribbean franchise was richly packed with jokes. But many of the jokes in this episode are references to other episodes and subtle Easter eggs. Or not very thin.

We've broken down some of them, but be warned - spoilers.

    1. Mini-prequel to the entire franchise

Captain Salazar, played by Javier Bardem, utters the phrase "Dead men tell no tales", which is included in the film's title. But we heard it before in " Curse of the Black Pearl", where the parrot said it, and also in the film " At the End of the World"- nothing new. But then we will find out how Captain Jack Sparrow got his nickname, hat, compass and accessories, which became part of his recognizable style.

    2. The Kraken doesn't talk

When Henry Turner, Will Turner's son, replies to the skeptical Karina Smith, "The Kraken doesn't talk," this is a direct reference to the film " Pirates of the Caribbean: Dead Man's Chest", where Will survived a kraken attack. And Henry definitely heard this story from his father and definitely believed it. By the way, Salazar's ship in attack mode looks damn similar to a kraken and should also stink: “the smell of a thousand rotting corpses,” according to the contents.

    3. Monkey and One Piece

This little Easter egg became known even before the film's release. One of the Reddit users, whose relative participated in the production of the picture, said that Hector Barbossa's monkey will be dressed in an outfit similar to the clothes of Monkey D. Luffy, the main character of the manga “One Piece. Big jackpot."

    4. New rock star

It's no secret that Johnny Depp has a soft spot for rock stars. Even in the first film, he borrowed elements of the image of a guitarist Rolling Stones Keith Richards for his outfit, and then helped him play the role of Jack's father, Captain Teague, in the films At World's End and On Stranger Tides" And in the new film, Paul McCartney got the tiny role of Uncle Jack, also at the suggestion of the actor.

    5. Jack's least favorite joke

Jack's uncle tells a joke that Sparrow has long disliked: "A skeleton walks into a bar and says: 'I'll have a beer and a mop.' And he is indignant because he does not understand what is funny about him. This is a cool joke from Depp, who disliked and did not understand this joke since the movie " Donnie Brasco": Al Pacino told it on the set. 6. The Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King

But this is not certain. Considering that Orlando Bloom played some of the main roles in the franchises “ Lord of the Rings" And " Pirates of the Caribbean", fans have long been looking for a connection between their worlds. And here you go, new fuel for controversy: Carina Smith is the “no husband” who can solve the map, and in The Return of the King there was Eowyn, who killed the sorcerer-king of Angmar... whom no husband could kill!

    7. Popeye the Sailor

The cartoon character from the thirties of the last century loved spinach and the song “I am Popeye the Sailor Man,” which, judging by the film, Hector Barbossa also loved. His musicians played this tune just before the pirate received news of Salazar's approaching ship.

    8. Historical reference

For the first time in the entire franchise, you can roughly estimate what year this film takes place. When Captain Jack Sparrow is kindly asked to choose his execution, the British soldiers mention the newfangled French guillotine, and Jack settles on it because he loves the French, who invented mayonnaise. Firstly, the guillotine was first used in 1792, and secondly, this is a subtle barb, to confess to the British their love for the French...

"Pirates of the Caribbean": The World's End

    "Everything immaterial

    suddenly became unimportant".

    Lord Beckett

More than a month has passed since the premiere of the film “Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End,” which concludes Gore Verbinski’s trilogy, but for some reason I still want to return to it, reliving the exciting adventures. A strange story that is not so easy to approach. She rocked the world. But did she change? It's difficult to answer this question. When you remember “Pirates,” it’s like you’re falling into an abyss or stepping into fog, you feel... You feel salty taste sea spray on the lips, as salty as blood, fear of a sea monster and an intoxicating feeling of power over the world. You feel that too much soul was put into the fiction, that it came to life and refused to obey its creators. And you feel... deception. Is it possible to consider the last part of the trilogy separately from the entire cycle? Hardly. But you can see the entire work through it, which is what I will try to do. What is Pirates of the Caribbean about? And, most importantly, about whom? Who main character? Whose story is the film based on? But this question cannot be answered unambiguously. This is a story about many heroes, equally bright, which seems nonsense in the modern impersonal world. The first person we see in the frame is Elizabeth Swan. The girl sings a pirate song, and many trials will befall her as she becomes a pirate captain and makes her dreams come true. But Elizabeth does not look like the usual daredevil, a pirate who has lost her feminine principle. No, she is the sea, his rebellious soul. But more on that a little later. The hard way Will Turner also passes through, in the first part we also first see him as a child, and in the last he is the captain of the legendary “Flying Dutchman”. This image is ambiguous and very tragic, however, like all the main and part secondary images trilogy. It is surprising that it is this hero who commits the first murder in the frame, and his fate, unknown until the very end of the film, is to be at sea between life and death, transporting the souls of the dead. It’s chilling to hear such hints running through all films, and there are dozens of similar hints in “Pirates.” Not every adventure book has such a complex structure, let alone a film. Or is it the story of Jack Sparrow, a strange pirate captain who is trying to reclaim his ship, the charming Black Pearl, one of the best ships of its time and one of the last pirate ships - even the Flying Dutchman is inferior in speed to the Pearl. But even in the first part, Jack admits that a ship is not just a keel, a deck, and sails. The ship is freedom. And, strangely, Jack does not need any ship, as an ordinary historical pirate would behave. Jack only needs the Black Pearl, and all other ships only help him achieve his goal. It seems that the captain and the “Pearl” are invisibly connected and, perhaps, cannot exist separately from each other. Therefore, when at the end of the second part Jack orders the ship to be torn to pieces by the Kraken, he betrays not only the Pearl, but also his own inner freedom. He betrays himself and... dies, ending up in the Valley of Retribution in Davy Jones' hiding place. But here you can already feel the lie. To come back to be real, the “suffering” shown to us by the filmmakers is not enough. And the pirate’s refusal to give up the ship, for which he even made a deal with the damned captain, putting his soul on the line, and an attempt to find eternal life in the end last movie seems not just fake, but a careless or deliberate fake, which could ruin all the magic shown in the previous installments. But let's return to the series as a whole, in reality, no one knows what Pirates of the Caribbean is. An adventure story about pirates? But for an adventure story there is too much fabulousness and magic. Fantasy? But the world of "Pirates" is too similar to ours. Comedy? (There were also some not so good ones reasonable people, who called this film a comedy.) A nice comedy, the third part of which begins with the mass hanging of innocent people, including a child! Something radically new was created, but there was not enough strength to implement it entirely. Not money, because the “Black Pearl” was built life-size, like the cave in the first part, many extreme shootings were done on location, and the actors learned to fight for real. No time, five years passed from the start of filming (2002) to the premiere of the last part (2007), and we still need to add time for the construction of scenery and other things organizational issues. An impressive period, isn't it? And this despite the fact that in the 21st century the genre of pirate history seemed to have finally died. Did director Gore Verbinski want to create a masterpiece? Who doesn't dream about this? But if you listen to the director’s comments on the first film, it becomes clear that even he had no idea what would happen. Gore advises Johnny Depp to watch the film in a theater with ordinary spectators, claiming that he will learn a lot of interesting things about his hero. According to the director, people fell into a stupor when they first watched it, because the film captured them and seemed to immerse them in a different, colorful reality. Verbinski says he "gave faith in the viewer again, because the viewer responded to every little detail." And this indicates that the film is special, and the viewer... That same mass viewer, who is constantly scolded by all and sundry, turned out to be able to perceive complex emotions and catch hints, and not just consume and have fun, as cinema has taught him for many decades. Perhaps “Pirates” does not teach you to think, but it does teach you to feel, and cruelly, which is why the viewer who has visited the world of Jack Sparrow for the first time experiences an emotional stupor. The viewer changes, and in the first minutes simply does not know what to do with unusual or forgotten emotions, drowned out by the monotonous gray life of the modern world.
A ship is freedom, and doesn’t it give it? emotional development to every person? You will inevitably remember the magic of art. It seemed to the creators of the film that the film was being created not in accordance with the canons, but contrary to the genre, from the heart. And, as evidenced by the popularity of the cycle, this was so. The film is non-standard, not typical, it violates the basic rules of approach to filming films of this kind. There are a lot of descriptions, complex psychological lines, and the images of the characters are very ambiguous. Even the images of minor characters are described, which is generally considered unimportant for such films. Just an incredible amount of secondary lines, subtexts, improvisations, a lot of original sound and sound from the set. The work was carried out according to the “all or nothing” principle, so the film turned out to be not half-hearted, complete, very capacious and bright, when each viewer can go their own way, endure their emotional experience and compose own opinion, and not be content with something imposed, similar to chewing gum, as is often the case. We constantly improvised with tricks and video effects, for the first time at that time when drawing computer graphics the computer technicians had to obey the director and preserve the acting, and not direct the film as they pleased (which always happened when the shooting and the computer created seemed to exist in two different planes, without being components of the picture). But the most surprising thing is that the ending of such an expensive film was not fully written out. Already during filming, the filmmakers realized that they were missing two final and very significant scenes. Supposedly, the film was supposed to end with Will Turner and Jack Sparrow closing the chest with the cursed Aztec gold. In the first version, the scene with the hanging, liberation and return to the Black Pearl was not there at all.
Special attention should be paid to the screenwriters, Ted Elliott and Terry Rossio, who tried to make the images of all the characters full, which is completely unusual for mass cinema. In addition, there were only two screenwriters, when usually more than a dozen people can work on a film script: one writes dialogue, another writes the plot, another writes images, etc. As a result, the film falls apart into many pieces that are emotionally unconnected. With the Pirates it was different. Gore Verbinski not only allowed the writers to attend film set, which no one seems to have done in the past many years, but also allowed the actors to make additions based on the images of their characters. The scriptwriters considered all the actors' ideas and were very democratic, the creation of the film was filled with general enthusiasm, and many worked on intuition. This kind of thing is generally not welcome in cinema, whose products are designed for such a wide audience. It's too expensive to experiment with films.
Making a picture in a year (this is about the first part) is a very short time for such a complex and expensive work. As Verbinski says, it was a lot of fun to work with, but no one seemed to understand what they were creating, and at the same time they felt like they were involved in something incredible and unknown; even the creators of the picture were surprised at how large-scale it turned out. Gore Verbinski admits in his commentary track for the film that everyone was like a family during filming. Everyone seemed to live in fairy tale world, creating a fairy tale with your own hands. The film balances on the line between children's cinema and adults, which simply explodes the system of formats that has developed in the world not only in cinema, but in all genres of art. The film was supposed to be a breakthrough in the new millennium, not because it was decided so when it was conceived, but because of its nature and energy filling with the power present in works created with the help of inspiration, and not to please the public. The first film is real: real in emotions and in the plot, in the ambiguous images of the characters and in the surroundings of the era, real in its magic. Even Jack Sparrow's pistol was purchased from an antique shop. This weapon was made in 1676. And if in the first film only the Interceptor was not a model on a barge, then for the second part they built the Black Pearl. The first film has something that every child dreams of, every person dreams of. The pirate series is liberating, but The Curse of the Black Pearl was only the beginning of a trilogy, so the bar for subsequent films had to be even higher in order to provide an emotional shock that leads to a new emotional experience for the viewer. Dead Man's Chest achieved this. And “At the End of the World” could have blown up the world and... made it whole and bright. But the revolution did not happen, as one of the viewers said after watching the last part of the series: “... with the world - like with that undermined Soviet bridge.” Bremen Town Musicians": the bridge took off, turned over... and fell back to its original place"... Alas. And, sadly, I have to agree with him. It seems that there were two parallel plots of the third part, although technically this is not entirely possible, because the shooting of the second and third films took place almost simultaneously. There were two potential names for the end of the cycle: "The World's End" and "At World's End". Agree that “The End of the World” and “At the End of the World” carry very different subtexts, not just meanings. "At World's End" is the place, possibly Singapore, where the heroes go at the beginning of the third part, possibly Davy Jones' hiding place, where Jack Sparrow is imprisoned. "The End of the World" is the beginning new era, and this is exactly what Lord Beckett, a representative of the new world and new time, is talking about, trying to exterminate pirates, subjugate the sea, not only in the realistic sense we are accustomed to, but also the rebellious soul of the elements, and destroy all magic. This is very clearly visible in the second part and, especially, in the third in the dialogues with Davy Jones, who, as a manifestation of magic, must follow the Kraken, killed on Beckett’s orders. Lord Beckett is evil, but not black, but grey, calculating, putting money above all else, it is because of him that not only the world of the “Pirates” is collapsing, but our real one is suffering as well. But here the falseness is felt. The conflict between Beckett (as a new, but worse, gray world without magic) and Jack Sparrow (as a bright, romantic, but dangerous and cruel world) is global. The director failed to resolve this confrontation. Yes, Beckett dies, defeated not only physically, but also morally, but even in his death (the scene where he descends from the captain's bridge) he becomes equal to the power of the image legendary heroes(Elizabeth Swan, Will Turner, Jack Sparrow, Davy Jones, Tia Dalma). The problem remains and new world still threatens pirate freedom and freedom in general. All the heroes, who embody legend and magic, escape from the battlefield. Jack Sparrow goes for eternal life. Although why he needs her without a fight is unclear. Elizabeth Swan and Will Turner are hiding, closing themselves off from the world with their love, dissolving in it. Tia Dalma and Davy Jones disappear from this reality. Lord Beckett is magnificent, and one cannot help but bow to the actor who gave life to this character. The character of Commander Norrington is also brilliantly played. Elizabeth's first fiancé changes so much during the development of the plot that he himself is worthy of a separate story. His fate is closely connected with the fate of the main characters, but he never becomes part of the legend, he is constantly on the sidelines. The Commander tries to catch Jack Sparrow, brings Davy Jones's heart to Lord Beckett, and helps Elizabeth. But his fate, although it came close to fate main character, “didn’t intertwine,” as he tells Elizabeth as he says goodbye.
Why can we call the main characters legendary, or rather, mythical? With Tia Dalma it’s more or less clear. She is the embodiment of the sea, trapped in human form. (It is strange, of course, that she is called the goddess Calypso, because in Greek mythology she was a nymph, whose name “she who hides” indicates a connection with the world of death). The mythical nature is also clearly manifested in Davy Jones, although the filmmakers combined in his image many things that at first glance were incompatible. The name "Davy Jones" is attributed to one of the dead sailors associated with " The Flying Dutchman", but at the same time this name is synonymous with the Devil and is often mentioned by sailors in curses. Davy Jones's chest is also a mythical formation, an object that promises troubles; initially it contained not a heart, but navigational instruments. Little is known about the "Flying Dutchman" and its captain , most legends bear the imprint of an adaptation that integrates the legend into the Christian worldview, although the angel appearing in the most famous version does not initially come to punish the proud and blasphemous, but behaves as a giver and a pagan deity who rewards pride. This indicates. on the fact that the legend of the "Flying Dutchman" is ancient and does not date back to the 15-17 centuries (according to different sources), when Christianization was no longer required. Ideas about the “ship of the dead” and a creature associated with water and the souls of the dead can be found in the myths of many peoples, and these myths either belong to very old layers, or there are many blank spots in the texts. For example, Charon (as one of the incarnations of the archetype) is practically not described; it is not even known for certain who his parents are and why he became a ferryman on the Styx, although Greek and Roman mythologies are characterized by an abundance of details and connections between gods and heroes. Love line in the legend it was updated by Richard Wagner, who took G. Heine’s adaptation as a source when creating the opera; in the opera, the damned captain has the opportunity to go ashore once every seven (and not ten) years.
Many myths are lost, but perhaps not forever, if we look at them archetypally rather than functionally. Which is what the creators of Pirates of the Caribbean did. But it was not possible to withstand the emotional level of mythical images. This manifested itself especially negatively in Tia Dalma. She is not the sea, not an element, the viewer did not see her promised “anger”. The whirlpool seems beautiful, it is drawn, it is not real, because its potential is not realized, and the myth requires extreme emotions and saturation to the fullest. Tia Dalma's transformation is not impressive at all. So what if it grew several meters and crumbled into crabs. Is this all the sea can do? Doubtful. It is much more likely that it would spread as water or become a wave, which is more natural and mythological. There is enough of this kind of falsehood, implemented through "tricks", in the third film.
The image of Elizabeth Swan in mythological terms is much more complex. If at the beginning it's just a young girl, the daughter of a governor, who ends up on a pirate ship... No, it's a little different, at the beginning it's a little girl who sings a pirate song, which is quite unusual for a young daughter of a governor. She strives for the sea, mysterious, illicit, magical. Elizabeth is frightened by the ghosts on the Black Pearl, but overcomes her fear. At the end of the first part, the unusual and wonderful become a familiar part of her life. Elizabeth changes, in the second part she scares people with the dress of a ghost wandering around the ship, and sends the ship on which she escaped from Beckett to Tortuga. The governor's daughter learns to fight, and then learns to betray, but even in the betrayal of Jack Sparrow, her elemental nature, the sea, is revealed. She is creating a new legend, although she does not know it. Elizabeth constantly comes into contact with death: the cursed crew on the Black Pearl, the ghost she shows to the crew of the merchant ship - an unkind sign that will later turn into death for the ship, an attempt to take her father away from death on the way to the human world in the third part, etc. d. Therefore, it is not surprising that she becomes the wife of the new Flying Dutchman and the new incarnation of the sea, coming into the world after the disappearance of Tia Dalma. Captain Xiaowen saw the nature of the elements in it; he was only mistaken in time. Will Turner is also associated with death from the very beginning. He miraculously escapes from the pirates, escapes the clutches of Davy Jones unharmed, and escapes the Kraken. But he kills other heroes more often, he is more ruthless. Although the pirate's son is driven by a good goal - to free his father, Will constantly betrays, and by the end of the third part his gaze becomes icy, and not loving. Perhaps the ship of the dead chooses its own captain. Will is caught between evil and good, combining them in himself, trying to achieve his father's freedom through betrayal. The handle of the knife that is always with him, the weapon on which he swore to free the prisoner of the damned captain, is black on one side and white on the other, like his own soul. And the most interesting thing is that Will himself forges the weapon with which Davy Jones later mortally wounds him. The sword runs through the entire film. This is a symbol. But it is never fully revealed. How much has not been revealed. For example, why does Xiaowen hate Jack Sparrow so much? Under what circumstances did the Black Pearl sank? How did Jack Sparrow become its captain? In general, what was his life like before arriving in Port Royal? How did Beckett capture the pirate captain and put the East India Company mark on the pirate's arm? What mark did Beckett himself receive as a gift from Jack?
And there are many such questions. How much the filmmakers kept silent about when they simply had to tell in order to reveal the conflict! The image of Jack Sparrow is most interesting if we consider it from the point of view of mythology. He is a mediator between the world of people and the world of magic, he is a man, but the unusual does not frighten him at all, or rather, it frightens him as much as it can threaten his life. (It should be remembered that there is also a connection between piracy and magic, because members of the first Pirate Council owned magical power, otherwise they would not have been able to capture the spirit of the sea in a human body). Jack's presence changes people's destinies, although he himself does not seem to evolve. And this slightly contradicts the myth, because the myth lives precisely in development. But, on the other hand, Jack is being tested, and he has a lot of tests. He is on the verge of death, and this should change the hero. Sparrows in Greek mythology- the only birds that can fly across the Styx, perhaps this is where its nickname comes from. And being swallowed by a sea monster (Kraken), traveling to the other world (the hiding place of Davy Jones) and returning to the world of people is a typical mythological plot necessary for the initiation of a hero. But, as a result of initiation, in the myth the hero receives magical power or new level development of his capabilities and, in particular, his image changes. And this is precisely what is not visible. Jack not only does not become stronger, he weakens, cannot overcome madness, and only in a duel with Davy Jones does his strength manifest itself, but this manifestation is more like an accident than the psychological development of the image of a hero. The ambiguity of the third film, the inability to hold on to the incredible high level emotional intensity spoils the whole feeling and negates the possibility of changing the real world. It seems that the grayness (Beckett) and the colorfulness (Jack Sparrow) are fighting not so much on the screen, but in the process of making the film. In addition to the two titles, it should be noted that there are two types of posters released before the start of the show. The difference is that some depict the film's characters walking through the fog (this scene is not in the film), while others have a blood-red background instead of gray (these ones appear before the film starts). The struggle between two worlds, or rather, two worldviews, is manifested in the film itself. Slightly cliched phrases of Captain Barbossa, bowing too low, as for a glorious pirate captain, stupid jokes with peeping, breaking off fingers, etc., which they tried in every possible way to avoid in the previous two parts, belong to the gray world of Beckett. The execution at the beginning of the picture, the battle with the Flying Dutchman, almost all the scenes with Norrington, Beckett and Davy Jones - here the myth appears, the legend is created. When Jack Sparrow dies in the second part, the world dims. This is very clearly visible if you watch the second and third parts without interruption. The gamma of the film becomes black and gray, although it was black and gold ("The Curse of the Black Pearl") and black and green ("Dead Man's Chest"). And the music is especially interesting. Main topic The film appears only when Jack Sparrow sees the sea again and is about to be freed. Before this, the scale was mainly represented either by melodies that ended quickly, with almost no development, or by individual sounds. The world becomes gray and silent, so the pirate Elizabeth sings while sailing in a boat in Singapore, and those sentenced to execution sing. To my great regret, it was never revealed why the coins remember the song of the condemned and pass it on to the pirates. And it would be better if the “nine pesos” were actually coins (by the way, Jack wears exactly a coin on his scarf), and not “chips” made from all sorts of garbage (I actually want to rewind the scene with the Council, it’s so fake and stupid). Then the mythical “nine pesos” would be radically different from the soulless money of the East India Company. But either they didn’t try to show the confrontation between the two worlds, or they couldn’t. On the other hand, it would be necessary to say who won. If you contact real story, then the pirates lost, and the East India Company became the ruler of the seas. And to show the victory of the pirates is to go against what is written in the textbooks, because the plot develops in our world, albeit full of magic. It is difficult to resolve such a conflict with dignity.
The viewer, captivated by the created world, waited for the resolution of the conflict, subconsciously believed that the experience gained would help in real life. And what I got... I got deception, characters who constantly betray and shuffle like cards, all the time lying and going over to the side of the enemy without proper psychological justification for their actions. A bunch of stupid jokes and complete callousness towards the extras. Sometimes I just wanted to take scissors and cut out some scenes, which was not the case in the previous parts.
And, at the same time, the lines of Davy Jones and Tia Dalma, magnificent in their tragedy, Lord Beckett, whom you look at with bated breath from fear or admiration, involuntarily bowing your head, the living and real Norrington. When the world changes and the magic goes away, sometimes it’s scary, and sometimes it’s painful, too recognizable, too real. But with Beckett's death, magic does not return to the world. There is no answer, after watching there is only powerlessness and a feeling of deception, there is no surge of incredible energy that I have become accustomed to over the years, while the previous parts of the series were released. I don’t want to change the real world and challenge dullness. And the end of such an unusual and exciting pirate cycle could become an incentive for such a change. Are the filmmakers to blame for not being able to complete the trilogy with dignity? Apparently, they themselves did not know that they were creating a new legend, reviving the world. But I wouldn’t want Lord Beckett to win, and everything “immaterial,” that is, magical, invisible, miraculous, to disappear forever from our real life, and only profit, betrayal and momentary interests remained, while love and adventure ran away from reality. What will happen to real world, only people can decide. And perhaps, when the world has to make a choice about what the future will become and whether the End of the World will come, which manifests itself primarily in a crisis of emotions, someone will remember that freedom is above all. And that freedom is not just a ship and a pirate sword, but faith in yourself and victory over the dullness in your own heart.

Pirates of the Caribbean 2017 promises to be many times better than the previous film in the franchise. Childhood friends Joakim Ronning and Espen Sandberg once responded to Luc Besson's proposal to make the film "Bandits". For the French producer and director of Leon, this was one of the many projects of his company EuropaCorp, and for the Norwegians it was a chance to express themselves. And she said, even though the film failed at the box office.

Joakim Ronning and Espen Sandberg showed that they know how to stage action scenes without worse than that or Luc Besson. Then the career of Norwegian directors consisted of a period where they made biographical films about outstanding personalities: "Max Manus: Man of War", "Kon-Tiki" and "Marco Polo" (the first two episodes of the series).

It's interesting that two latest project Norwegians are associated with travelers who became famous for their exploits on the water. And if for “Marco Polo” they staged only the first two episodes, then for the full-length film “Kon-Tiki” they received a well-deserved Oscar nomination.

Directors and actors of the new “Pirates”

Over time, Norwegian directors were offered a larger project - the fifth part of Pirates of the Caribbean. On at the moment The subtitle says that dead men tell no tales, and therefore it can already be assumed that we are in for another battle between Jack Sparrow and his team with the other world.

The project is notable not only for the presence of Norwegian directors in the directors' chairs, but simply for the fact that Johnny Depp will finally return to the big screens in the image of a hero loved by many viewers around the world. And although the previous part slightly disappointed fans, the new adventures of Jack Sparrow, according to the producers, will have to rehabilitate them in the eyes of Pirates of the Caribbean fans in 2017.

In addition to directors, it is worth noting the presence of cast Orlando Bloom. At first British actor pleases his fans with the appearance of Legolas in the second part of the Hobbit trilogy, and now he will make them happy with his presence in the fifth part of The Pirates. Even Will Turner's absence from On Stranger Tides won't affect the plot of The Dead. On the contrary, the producers assure that Will Turner will significantly influence the story shown in the new film.

At the same time, Penelope Cruz is missing. It seems that her character, Angelica (if the post-credits scene in On Stranger Tides is to be believed), was meant to be a nuisance to Jack Sparrow in the sequel. But instead of her, her real husband, Javier Bardem, will play in “The Dead.” The Spanish actor will take on the role of the terrible captain Salazar, with whom Jack Sparrow will fight.

What story will “The Dead” tell viewers?

The approximate plot says that Captain Salazar, along with his ghostly pirates (that's why "Dead Men" is in the title) escaped from the Devil's Triangle to deal with all competitors. The Trident of Poseidon, which is hunted by both the hero of Javier Bardem and Jack Sparrow, grants one of them power over the sea and its endless expanses.

It's entirely possible that this film could be Johnny Depp's last in the Pirates franchise, given his current status and age. And if you complete the story with dignity, no one will be offended. Moreover, no one will notice the absence of Jack Sparrow in the sequel, since he will be replaced by heroes of the new time: Henry and Karina Smith. But these are just guesses.

Brenton Thwaites and Kaya Scodelario owe their popularity to teen films. The former starred in The Initiate, while the latter starred in The Maze Runner. It’s easy to guess that if not the main, then one of the main storylines, including love. Surely both will represent Jack Sparrow's side.

What to expect from the Pirates of the Caribbean sequel in 2017

The project's cinematographer will be Paul Cameron. He has produced such films as “Déjà Vu”, “Anger”, “Accomplice”, “Total Recall”, etc. This track record suggests that viewers will be treated to incredibly beautiful action.
